There is not much to say about the Basque language of 2000 years ago. Written testimonies and references to the language and its previous inhabitants are not available, and this fact makes it difficult to describe their linguistic environment, if guesswork wants to be avoided.

The most accurate studies realised in the Basque Country up to now sustain that the Basque developed in situ from the cromagnon, and that the Basque language formed itself similarly. Thus, the theories that the Basque man and his language were present elsewhere and that his presence in the Basque Country is due to emigration from the East of Europe, from the Caucasus, from Africa or other parts of the world, is rejected.
